MERV

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, a rating system by ASHRAE to measure how effectively air filters remove particles. The scale ranges from 1 to 20, with higher ratings indicating better filtration.

Paint overspray

Paint droplets that land outside the intended area during spraying. Exhaust-side filters are sized and rated to hold that overspray before it reaches the stack.

Pocket / cube filter

A multi-pocket exhaust filter. Pocket count and depth determine the surface area and the dust-holding capacity: a 3-pocket cube holds more overspray than a single-pocket cube of the same face size.

Holding frame

A steel welded-wire frame that carries a cut-to-size media pad in place of a pre-manufactured filter. One frame is bought once; only the pad is replaced at changeout.

Pressure drop

The resistance a filter adds to airflow, measured in inches of water column. It rises as the filter loads with particles. That is why a lower initial resistance means less strain on the fan and less energy used over the filter’s life.
